GitLab for Open Source
GitLab for Open Source gives accepted projects no-cost access to GitLab Ultimate features, either on GitLab.com or a self-managed instance, plus 50,000 compute minutes calculated at a program-specific cost factor. This is software and CI support, not cash funding.
Eligibility. Every project in the applying namespace must use an OSI-approved open-source license. The organization may accept donations to sustain its work, but must not seek profit by selling services, charging for enhancements or add-ons, or by other means. The GitLab group or self-managed instance and its source code must be publicly visible and available. Personal namespaces are not eligible; GitLab says eligible GitLab.com groups must be owned by the applicant and on the Free tier. The license is for approved public open-source projects in the namespace. Limited private projects for sensitive data require prior written permission.
Application and renewal. Sign in to the GitLab Customers Portal and submit the program form. GitLab.com applicants verify their group; self-managed applicants must explain why self-management is necessary. After review and approval, GitLab emails instructions to activate the subscription. Membership must be renewed annually through the application process; an unrenewed account is downgraded. The program page recommends starting renewal at least one month ahead. Self-managed applications may be delayed during holidays.
Limits. Product support is not included. The 50,000 compute-minute benefit uses a program-specific cost factor, so it is not a general guarantee of 50,000 standard minutes. See the program requirements and FAQ, the program agreement, and GitLab’s compute-minute documentation for current terms.

Should you use this?
- Best for
- Projects whose main blocker is hosting, CI, storage, AI tooling, or operational overhead.
- Not ideal for
- Projects that need direct maintainer income rather than cost reduction.
- Why choose it
- Free GitLab Ultimate features and CI compute for qualifying public open-source namespaces. Every project in the namespace must meet the license rule; annual renewal is required, and product support is excluded.
- Watch out for
- Credits and tooling reduce burden but usually do not fund maintainer time directly.
- Setup effort
- Medium
- Fees
- GitLab provides program members a no-cost Ultimate subscription with 50,000 compute minutes calculated at a program-specific cost factor. Product support is not included. Membership requires annual renewal; the subscription is downgraded if it is not renewed.
